I finally got around to tidying up my piles of paperwork yesterday. I found quite a few sheets containing lists of goals, ideas, and growth models for my various projects and was quite surprised to realize that I had ticked almost every item off the list.
It was a good feeling to see what I had accomplished and comforting to know that even when I wasn´t really paying attention (these lists had been buried in my in box months ago) I had stayed focussed. Creating a list of goals is a practice that most business coaches, gurus and mentors recommend. Not only does it help to focus your thoughts and ideas, but it can keep you motivated as well as give you a sense of satisfaction when you accomplish each item.
- Goals should be easily measurable. (e.g. “Make ten sales each month”, rather than “makes loads of sales”)
- Include short-term as well as long-term goals, so that you have things you can accomplish in the near future
- Keep your goals realistic but high. Challenge yourself to succeed, but don’t raise the bar too high, or you are setting yourself up for dissapointment. (e.g. “Get on the first page of Google for my main keywords” is a better starting point than “Become the number one software seller of all time.”)
