Can Twitter Keep Business Clients?

Despite being one of the top three sites that come to most people’s mind when they think social media, Twitter has notably floundered when it comes to monetizing it’s success. Ideas seem slow to germinate and troublesome to implement, leaving the company far behind the dollar signs of Facebook, Linked In and YouTube. Now, at least, they seem to be thinking about B2B as a viable market for revenue.

Marketing Magazine recently announced that Twitter are considering offering businesses ‘pages’ similar to Facebook.  It’s an idea that I like in theory, but there are two major problems:

  1. It’s copying Facebook, and running second is never a good position in such a fast paced and competitive market.
  2. Facebook business pages are free.

Currently Twitter only offers promoted or featured tweets as a way to generate revenue, but these are ineffectual. (Purely my opinion, but if you click on any of these ads, please do feel free to correct me in the comments!)

This is not to say that I think that Twitter isn’t great for businesses, or that any services offered will mean an either/or scenario for business owners, but they will have to step up their game if they are to stay in the running.

Would you pay for a Twitter business page?
