Google released their new format benchmark report this month, showing the average analytic statistics of websites around the world compared to last year. Here are the highlights. How does your website compare?
When guiding people through their analytics reports, people often ask me “Is that good?” Well now you can take a look and see if your traffic measures up.
| 1/11/09 – 1/2/10 | 1/11/10 – 1/2/11 | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pages/Visit | 4.9 | 4.5 | -0.4 |
| Bounce Rate | 48.2% | 47.0% | -1.2% |
| Avg. Time on Site | 5:49 | 5:23 | -0:26 |
Interestingly, the biggest changes seemed to have been a decrease in bounce rates for US sites… a good sign that webmasters are improving their sites and SEO tactics.
| Traffic Sources | Pages / Visit | Bounce Rate | Avg. Time on Site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct | 4.0 (-0.5) | 47.2% (-4.0%) | 5:21 (-0:07) |
| Referral | 5.0 (+0.1) | 43.1% (-1.1%) | 6:36 (-1:48) |
| Organic Search | 4.9 (-0.1) | 47.9% (-1.1%) | 4:43 (+0:06) |
| CPC Search | 5.6 (+0.0) | 41.4 (-1.7%) | 3:57(+0:07) |
Another significant change was seen in over 5% of users switching away from Internet Explorer and moving to browsers such as Safari and Chrome.
How does your website compare to these averages?

PPC traffic seems to be the best. Only forum traffic can beat that in terms of quality of the lead.
Shame it became so expensive..
I also got this report and i was very surprise that on average only 35% (cant remember precise number) visitors comes from SE !
I thought that is going to be way higher !
How is that possible ? Are all webmasters using social media and ppc so much ?
Luke´s last [type] ..How to get a degree fast
Interesting, Luke. I tend to find that PPC traffic isn’t as pre-qualified as other sources, and that the brevity of ads can limit effectiveness. That coupled with the high time committment needed to manage a PPC campaign means it tends to come lower on my list of traffic generating strategies.
