How to See What People “Like” on Your Site with Facebook Insights

14 June 2010 One Comment

So you jumped on the bandwagon and installed the Facebook “Like” button across your website. Now what? Well first, let me say “Nice jump!”

Although I am not a fan of the Like button for many reasons it is a fantastic tool for website owners as it allows their users to interact quickly and share what they like with their connections on Facebook. Even better, it lets you gain valuable insight into your user demographics, and the popularity of the content on your site.

How?

Well, Facebook kindly created a nice, neat Insights dashboard for site owners to track Like clicks across their domain.

Here’s how to find out more information about what people Like on your site:

  1. Install the Like button on your site.
If you aren’t technically minded, don’t panic! There are some great resources  here, or if you are a more visual person, try this YouTube tutorial from DuctTape Marketing.  Personally, I use the Facebook Like plug in for Wordpress.
  2. Install the meta code
Visit the Facebook Insights Dashboard and click the Insights for your domain button in the top right corner.
  3. Type your domain name (without the http:// bit) into the box and select which Facebook profile or page you want to be connected with the domain.  (If you don’t want to mess with advanced code, I recommend sticking to your individual Facebook profile.)
  4. Copy and paste the meta code provided into the header of your website or blog.
  5. Click Check Domain, and if you have installed the code correctly you should be taken to your Insights dashboard for your domain.
  6. View the results!
When you log in to Facebook Insights you should now see Like activity and demographics from your website!

Note:  Several people have reported slow updates, and new data can take up to 48 hours to appear on your dashboard.  Not great, but hopefully something that Facebook will improve on in the future.
